Great Golden Retriever Puppy Training Tips
Golden Retrievers are great dogs
Golden Retrievers are great dogs. Not only are they cute and loveable, they are great with families that have children. These dogs are mild natured and are very interested in pleasing their owners. This makes them fairly easy to train, as long as you take the time and effort that is needed to do it.
You have to show them the acceptable behaviors and teach them the rules in their new home.
The first thing you should do is house train your new dog. You have a responsibility to keep your home clean and free from animal urine and feces. A great way to train your golden retriever puppy to do these things outside is to make use of a crate.
You should keep them in the crate over night or during times that you cannot be with them. As soon as you let them out of the crate you should take them right outside for a walk or let them run in the yard so they can do their business out there.
Another benefit of crate training your golden retriever puppy is that it protects your furniture and other items around your home from the chewing the nearly every puppy does. While purchasing a crate may cost you between twenty five and two hundred dollars, compare this price to the price of replacing your furniture because the puppy chewed it up.
The crate is definitely less expensive.
One way to curb the natural need to chew is to provide them with chew toys. There are great toys available on the market today that will allow them to chew but not destroy your property. Knuckle bones are great because they clean their teeth as well as meet their need to chew.
If you teach them what is acceptable to chew on then you are training them to leave all of the items that are off limits alone.
When you leave the dog in the crate while you are away at work or out of the home for awhile you are also keeping them from getting hurt. Dogs do not understand that chewing on electrical cords or on bottles of chemicals can hurt, if not kill, them.
All they know is that they need to chew and these items are available. You can protect them from getting sick or killed by keeping them in the crate while you are gone.
Golden Retrievers tend to need a lot of attention. This is great if you are able to spend all day every day with them but spending this much time with your puppy is not something that every person can do.
You can make use of the crate to teach your new puppy that they will need to be on their own at times. They will teach them to spend time alone and will cut down on the separation anxiety that some golden retrievers have when their owners leave them alone.
Puppies sometimes get overly excited and begin to nip at people and begin running about the house uncontrollably. You can calm them down by putting them in the crate for a short amount of time. This will give them the necessary time to compose themselves and get back to a more manageable energy level.
You should not use your crate in a negative way, for punishment. It should be used for training purposes. Your golden retriever puppy will learn to be the great dog that you have always wished for after spending some time being trained by their new owner.
