Great Greek Escapes: Winter Getaway Or Summer Retreat?
As the birthplace of western civilization, scattered with precious fragments of history
and blessed with dramatic scenery, a string of beautiful islands and a clement climate, Greece is a beguiling holiday destination at any time of year. Choosing when to visit is simply a matter of personal preference. If your agenda consists of relaxing on the beach, developing a deep tan, and partying the night away then summer is probably the best time to go. But if you prefer exploring ancient sights, soaking up the local culture and escaping the crowds, then winter could suit you better.
From June to September, the numerous Greek islands are open for business. Visitors flock to beaches from the verdant shores of Corfu in the Ionian Sea all the way down to history-steeped Crete in the Mediterranean Sea. In Crete, the hotels are full and the islands ancient marvels teem with tourists, while in Corfu the beachfronts buzz with activity as visitors make the most of its sunny weather and crystal-clear waters. If you enjoy vibrant nightlife, then visiting Greeces islands in high season is definitely the best bet, with bars and nightclubs bouncing into life and staying open long into the night.
During the winter months, Crete hotels, as well as resorts on Greeces other main islands, become much quieter so its a great time to experience traditional local life. In Cretes chief towns of Chania, Rethymnon, Heraklion and Agios Nikolaos , the shopping and eating options are numerous. Little tavernas offer tasty local fare and live music, and Christmas markets spring up throughout December selling traditional Cretan wares. Mild temperatures also mean the island is perfect for a warming winter getaway, and culture vultures can explore famous ancient monuments such as the Minoan palace at Knossos in virtual seclusion.
On the mainland, major cities like Athens and Thessaloniki come into their own during the winter time with lively nightlife and ancient sights free of the high-season crowds. For archaeology buffs, in particular, the drop in tourist numbers during the winter creates an opportunity to soak up popular sites such as the Acropolis in Athens, ancient Olympia and the mysterious temple of the Oracle at Delphi in relative peace and quiet. Athens and Thessaloniki are ideal destinations for a mid-winter dose of sunshine and Greek culture. Both cities offer a brilliant choice of dining, accommodation, entertainment, shopping and sightseeing options. During the day, a thriving cafe culture means the backstreets and squares are never empty, while after dark bustling bars, dance clubs and music venues offer something to suit all tastes.
