Great Guitar Tutorials: Finding What You Need Online
Music is universal
Music is universal. Creating the sounds that are linked to humanity's deepest emotions is a talent. Some people seem to be born with this ability, but most of us need to be taught how to play. This is especially true for the guitar, one of the most popular and widely used musical instruments. If you want to learn to play the guitar, get ready for a rewarding experience that ultimately will provide enjoyment over a lifetime.
We are all familiar with the cartoon pictures of a child gazing sadly out the window, seeing his friends playing while he is forced to practice the piano. Later in life those lessons start to take on a new importance, and many of us regret not paying more attention. It is never too late to start learning how to play and create music. All it takes is a good teacher, a little time and practice.
What is the best way to learn this skill? Private home lessons with a good teacher are the ideal, but may be impractical, and can be costly. They usually require setting aside time during the day, which may be difficult to schedule. An excellent alternative for the beginner is the Internet, home to a variety of online instructional courses in music education. There are a number of step-by-step methods available, and one may work for you.
Good advice for the novice is to do a lot of comparison shopping before settling on a particular course. Choices range from written instructions, free web-based videos, or courses on DVD. They all progress in a similar fashion, usually starting with the fundamentals and progressing to complex. As a budding musician it is important to realize exactly what you might truly need in a course. Be sure to analyze your current talent and abilities honestly. Do not discourage yourself before you start by choosing something too advanced or complex.
The beginner needs to master some basic skills. The temptation is to jump right to the "good stuff", and skip the less exciting but necessary foundation. That foundation includes, of course, a decent six-string guitar, not necessarily expensive. You will also need a supply of picks of a light gauge to begin with, and your fingers will get sore at first. And, don't forget to bring patience and attention, because a simple love of music is not enough on its own. It needs to be channeled into useful knowledge.
All online courses for the beginning students will start basically the same way. A good course will not neglect the physical aspects of the guitar and strings, because it is important to understand what is producing those great sounds, and what their names and functions are. It will teach how to tune those strings, and what the correct fingering positions are. Equally important is learning to read the notes on a page, and exactly what they mean.
Once the basics have been presented, most courses will teach you how to turn that knowledge into a song. Nearly every kind of music we hear and enjoy today makes use of the guitar in some fashion, whether that is classical, pop, rock or jazz. Be sure not to skip sight reading, because recognizing and understanding the notes on a musical page is essential for musical development. The person who proudly proclaims that they have never had a lesson may indeed have a great deal of musical ability and natural talent, but is actually at a disadvantage when it comes to written notes.
A good online course will not stop at the basics of fingering and musical notation. From there it will teach more advanced chord structure, harmony and style, not to mention strumming techniques and rhythm skills. It will present these lessons in a way that progresses naturally, and can be followed at your own pace. If you want to learn to play the guitar on your own schedule, an online course is probably the best choice. Then you can surprise and delight your friends with your new talent and abilities, and master a skill that lasts for a lifetime.
