Is it just me or does it seem like the number of great new songs created each year
has gone down in numbers? Is it possible that we actually have hit a point in history where it is more difficult to create a great new song simply because there are so many thousands and thousands of great songs already in existence? Is it possible that any good new musical idea is actually a reference to an idea already used in some song somewhere? Interesting questions for songwriters for sure. I read where that because of recording software coming installed on laptops that approximately 10,000 new songs are recorded and uploaded to the internet EVERY MONTH! Wow. If that statistic is anywhere close to be true then we have certainly reached some kind of saturation level of songwriting as a human species. With the great respect in the world, chances are that most of those songs are lousy but even stillwho has the time to listen to it all just to see if its any good? Th old adage that the cream rises to the top absolutely holds true in these times and songwriters and composers dont appear to be slowing down in anyway shape or form. So the rare great song that is written in the next 5 years will poke its head out of the clutter somehow. Or will it? 10,000 new songs per month is a LOT of competition. I find it interesting that more and more there are geographical hits where a song is a huge hit on media (terrestrial radio, satellite radio, internet radio, TV) in one location and several towns over (or several countires over) they have never even heard of the song. OF course that was always true but it seems possibly more so now with all this songwriting and composing airwaves clutter. So heres a toast to all this asounding creativity and tools that we now have. I look forward to creating more myself and hearing the great songs that are able to find their way through this media jungle we all now live in.
