. First what you will need are DDF files (field.ddf, index.ddf and file.ddf). The procedure to produce these files in described in ODBC manual which could be opened in PDF format from installation CD. There are chances that these files already exist. To check this look your GPSGPData folder as they might be produced long time ago for something like data export or Crystal reports. Next step is to establish ODBC connection. We recommend Pervasive SQL Control Center where you can create new database (and ODBC System DSN). Control Center allows you to run correction SQL queries such as Select, Update and Delete. These queries are aggregated and you could update large number of rows in a matter of seconds. Older versions of GPA such as 8.2 have owner password and it makes data update complicated. Lets discuss data update technique in details:

1.Owner Password work around. One of the articles in knowledge base recommends File Access Utility to take off password. We had the case where this method didnt work and we found the work around. Pervasive SQL installation has Bin subfolder with Btrieve Utilities (Butil.exe). You can clone and repopulate it and replace original one. This method should allow you to update clone in Control Center

2.SQL Syntax is similar to general SQL. There are nuances such as table name should be in double quotes. Here is the example:

3.Table structure is simple in the sense that file names are abbreviations are intuitive. For example CMOpen.dat table is Cash Management Open Transactions

4.If you have several companies then the oldest one is typically in GPData directory and all the others are in their abbreviated folders in GPS directory on the server

5.32 bit restriction is essential. Newest versions of Pervasive have different driver and if you try to clone the file in order to do shortcut in Owner Password suppression cloned file might be not compatible. You should use Pervasive SQL 2000

Q. Is it possible to use something else instead of Pervasive Control Center?

A. Yes it is possible. In the past when Pervasive was not yet introduced our favorite tool was Microsoft Access with Linked Tables. If you are not comfortable with SQL statements then Access is probably easier for you to use. In earlier versions of MS SQL Server we used Linked Server construction but later on it seems like SQL Server favors Integration Services and we had some issues with connection

Q. We do not have DDF files for our version 9.1. But our consulting firm has them for 9.5. Is it possible to use newer ones?

A. The answer is it depends on the table. Is its structure is the same then new DDF files should do the job. Otherwise connection might be impossible or partial where you can select records but cannot update them

Q. Which migration path from Great Plains DOS would you recommend? We are thinking about QuickBooks.

A. It really depends on your requirements and budget. We definitely recommend migration to Microsoft Dynamics GP as you do not need data conversion phase. Data migration is automatic by migration tool
