Great Plains Upgrade To Dynamics Gp Questions And Answers

Great Plains Dynamics was old name of this mid-market ERP application when it was owned by original development firm Great Plains Software

. This application was rebranded as Microsoft Dynamics GP when Microsoft acquired GPS in late 1990th. So you should not consider your installation as being something different from code base perspective as it was and still is Dexterity application. There are customers on DOS versions 9.5 and earlier but the good news is GPS prepared reliable migration tool and it was maintained by Microsoft Business Solutions. It means that even DOS customers have update option up to the current version 2010 or 2013 depending when you are reading this document. We tried to put together frequently asked question and answer them in this session:

Q. We are on Pervasive SQL/Btrieve and release is 7.5. Is Dynamics GP available on Pervasive as we never heard about it?

A. No it is only available on MS SQL Server and the last one was 7.5 which had several DB platforms supported. For you it means that you need one additional step as there is migration tool from Pervasive to Microsoft SQL Server. The tool is pretty reliable and there are procedures where one of them is to setup GL account format prior to migration

Q. We are trying to decide between SAP Business One and GP. Would you mind to give us your opinion?

A. SAP B1 is probably a little bit less expensive in the sense of software licenses. However you will need data conversion including export from Great Plains, cleansing and filling up CSV templates to be imported in SAP BO Data Transfer Workbench. If you decide to pick GP then you should expect discount (usually around 40% of the pricelist but it may depends on the promotions and the time when you are updating). As there is migration tool and update procedure all your historical, current, module settings and master data will be transferred and data conversion is not needed at all

Q. We are on GP DOS 9.2 and currently we are recovering from long term slow down and business is picking up. What are our options if we decide to stay with Microsoft Business Solutions?

A. You should be eligible to get discount on software and there is migration tool from GPA 9.5 to GP 8.0. There is upgrade diskette 9.X to 9.5 and even if you do not have floppy drive you simply copy it into C: root and run update from there. When you are on 8.0 on MS SQL then the rest is simple two step procedure to move you up to 2010

Q. We are on GPA 9.5 and we cannot find local consulting firm to move us to GP 2010. Is it the end of the story for us?

A. Probably not as we do the job remotely. You copy to our ftp your zipped GPS folder and we convert it all the way and send you back Dynamics and Company databases backup from SQL Server. There is no need to sit in your office and do conversion locally
