Travertine tiles are a type of flooring made from the sedimentary rock of the same name. These rocks are the product of carbonate minerals precipitating after being exposed to geothermal hot springs. Moreover, there is a variant called tufa, which is similar to travertine but more porous.

Travertine rocks have been popularly used in building construction. In fact, the largest building in the world that is mostly constructed from this sedimentary rock is the Colosseum in Rome. Other buildings like the Getty Center in LA or the Sacr-Coeur Basilica in Paris also use the same rock. In regular homes, however, these rocks are widely known for their great appeal in patios and garden paths.

Buying the tiles

1. Know where youre going to use it.

The first step in buying these sorts of tiles is to know the surface or area where youll be using them. These tiles are known to be greatly durable but they are still subject to damage. Be wary of the surface of the stone, which is largely vulnerable from the acidic trait of lemons and other items.

2. Decide on the finish you want.

Next, you must decide whether you want brushed, honed, polished or tumbled. Honed and polished tiles greatly resemble marble due to their smooth finish. Polished tiles, however, have a matte finish and are shinier. But if you want to retain the imperfections of the stone for aesthetic purposes, choose a tumbled or brushed finish.

3. Choose the color and shape of the tiles.

After choosing the finish, choose the color you want. Fortunately, these tiles are available in an assortment of natural shades. You can even mix several different tones for a specific effect. Moreover, color mixes are also great when you blend the shapes. But before doing so, dont forget to take into account the space.

Lastly, after buying and installing the travertine tiles, dont forget to apply a sealant. Choose a quality sealant, which can protect the tiles from spills. Furthermore, remember to buy the appropriate cleaning tools for maintenance and care.
