For several thousand years, Greece has had an influential role in the world

, and it is still regarded by many as the birthplace of Western civilisation.

Because of the scale of the influence which the country has had on our modern way of life, it is difficult for many to imagine that today, it is enduring severe problems as a result of a massive budget deficit, and the consequent need for drastic public spending cuts so that it can bring that deficit back within limits prescribed by the European Union.

Nevertheless, the historic role which Greece has played in many aspects of modern life cannot be underestimated, nor too the rich legacy which the Ancient Greeks have left in terms of the monuments and other edifices which attract millions of visitors to the country every year.

Greece lies at the southern tip of Europe, between the Mediterranean and Aegean Seas, and aside from the main peninsula also comprises about 2,000 islands. Many of these are known the world over for their climate and scenery which make them prime tourist destinations.

The country has been a European Union member since 1981, and 20 years later was admitted to the single European currency. As a result of this, the huge debts which the country has accrued in recent years are denominated in euros, and this is having a detrimental effect of the value of the currency as a whole. This is why the country has been forced recently to take tough austerity measures.

However, Greeces often spectacular scenery, warm, Mediterranean climate and mainly competitive living costs have made it a popular location for northern Europeans looking for either a temporary second home, or a permanent place in the sun.

And as these people head south, their families and friends will naturally be keen to find the most efficient and cost-effective ways of staying in touch, especially when special occasions such as birthdays, weddings, births, christenings and engagements are being celebrated.
