Green Cars Are Unlucky
In many countries, green cars are considered unlucky
. So strong is this superstition that there are still people who will not buy a green car. Some people will not even ride in a green car.
Exactly where the belief that green cars are unlucky came from is lost in the mists of time. It is known that for centuries green was associated with tree spirits. Those spirits were some of the most feared, because they were believed to take possession of a person's soul. As a direct result of this superstition, people did not wear green or like to have anything green inside their house. Actors were especially sensitive about the colour green. They would not have anything green on stage with them.
This age-old aversion to green things has manifested itself in modern times with people avoiding green cars. Green cars are believed to be more prone to break down and some people even believe that green cars have more accidents. This is totally unfounded; statistics show that green cars have no more accidents than any other colour car.
The aversion to green cars really took root in the public's mind following 2 serious racing accidents. At Syracuse, New York on 17 September 1911, 11 spectators died and 10 were badly injured when Lee Oldfield's Knox racer blew a tire and crashed into them, his car was green. On 25 November 1920 at Beverley Hills Board Track, Gaston Chevrolet died in his green Frontenac. Eddie O'Donnell and Lyall Jolls, who were in the other car involved in the accident also died. These incidents not only alarmed the public, but also affected people in the racing world. Even today, drivers such as Mario Andretti will not even touch anything green.
Today, the internet continues to strengthen the aversion to green cars. Several e-mails, which regularly circulate describe how someone's green car has crashed for no reason. Some of these e-mails even claim that the cars are possessed.
Think carefully before buying a green car, you may find it difficult to sell it. However, if you are not superstitious and are in the market for second hand cars seek out green cars, they can sometimes be cheaper.
