Some of the most important points to remember while selecting the site for a green development would be: Sites that encourage walking instead of driving. Sites in older areas which already have utilities and roads and one can take advantage of existing infrastructure. Usually older neighborhoods are also closer to job centers, schools, public transit, and shopping. So, less time and fuel are required to get around. Such sites also offer convenience and a good quality of life. Sites that are small as smaller lots increase density and thereby optimise the use of roads and services. Another important criterion for a green development would be to select a site that has good solar exposure as this will enable designers to consider generation of on-site solar power for various energy needs of the development.

It is avoidable to select sites which are a natural habitat of any wildlife.

During the construction phase one can preserve the integrity of the site by carrying a low-impact development that maintains the land's hydrologic functions and reduces stormwater runoff. The other consideration would be to preserve trees existing on the site during the construction phase.
