Green Easter Ideas For The Family
Easter baskets are very central to the event, especially when nicely draped in cellophane
together with the accompanying grass and plastic eggs; they have a rather disposable nature considering that the core Easter theme revolves around ideas like rebirth, new life and resurrection.
You may not be implementing some drastic changes in your life but remember that there are various steps you can take to ensure that you have an eco-friendly Easter festivity which will align with the significance of the holiday. Here are some.
Begin with the Easter Basket
Why not try things differently this year, other than purchasing a new basket consider reusing last years basket. In my trip around town last week; I spotted an entire shelf covered with Easter baskets in a local thrift store. If you decide to purchase a new Easter basket this year then carefully store it so that it can be used next year or even passed down younger siblings or donated to a neighbor.
If you're the crafty and inventive type why not try your hand at making your own Easter basket? You can do this using readily available material at home; and you could just be help conserve the environment by reusing material that was headed to the trash bin.
Go Green With Non-plastic Easter Grass
Plastic is a hydrocarbon derived from petroleum and plastic based Easter grass will have little use after the holiday is gone. Therefore why not try lining Easter basket with the shredder waste. Suppose you don't have a shredder then ask a friend or any acquaintances that works in an office of owns a shredder. The advantage of paper is that it can be recycled or trashed when done with. Packing materials can also be reused; say bubble wrap or peanuts cover that are decorative enough.
You can even make the basket lining part of the gift. There many soft treats that can make pairs of socks, pretty gloves, decorative scarves, headbands and hair ribbons.
What about treats and chocolates?
When shopping for chocolates, choose brands that come with minimal packaging, are organic, locally made or bear the Fair Trade logo. Even better, crate your own special treats such as suckers and egg-shaped cookies. If using plastic egg then check out the thrift store's toy section. This might take some sifting through but I've seen plenty of these at my local store year long. Pack the eggs together with small redeemable coupons for special occasions, ideas include a movie ticket, special dessert or even that extra 20 minutes bedtime your kid is always trying to squeeze out of you.
Use Natural Dyes
When it comes to Easter eggs stay away from anything that may harm the environment; try using natural dyes for your Easter egg coloring, avoid items with too much packaging. Go natural this year, consider using spices and foods that you possibly already have; use natural dye to color your Easter Eggs. By doing this you'll be teaching your kids some important lessons such that the science of coloring eggs is more than just a dye tablet in a cup of liquid.
