Grenada: Spicy, Sweet, And Delicious
The nation of Grenada is one of the most popular holiday destinations in the Caribbean
for many reasons: gorgeous beaches with crystal-clear waters that are warm all-year long, perfect for water sports; over 30 amazing dive sites; lush natural forests and wildlife; expansive plantations with long and colourful histories; exciting cultural events; and world-class resorts and hotels, such as the Calabash hotel. For the epicure, however, the main attraction is the scrumptious Caribbean cuisine. Local restaurants, such as the Rhodes and Bash Restaurants of the Calabash hotel offer mouth-watering dishes featuring exotic spices and the freshest ingredients, including seafood caught the same day by local fishermen. For the die-hard epicure, Grenada offers many other food-related activities and adventures that will surely overload your taste buds. Listed below are some of our favourites.
Fish Friday (and every day)
From the Calabash hotel, travel to Gouyave for Fish Friday, a weekly street festival that features local delicacies, the best seafood dishes, and street performances and music. If youre lucky enough to be visiting this premiere fishing village in June, be sure to check out their annual Fishermans Birthday celebration, which is participated in by people from around the world. Many fishing enthusiasts and foodies also take the opportunity to go deep-sea fishing with local fishermen and then have their catch cooked by local seaside restaurants - truly the perfect way to spend and end a day.
Shop till you drop at Spice Market
Grenada is called the Isle of Spice for good reason. Allspice, clove, cinnamon, ginger, bay leaves, turmeric, nutmeg, and more (including chocolate and sugar) are produced by this Caribbean nation. Quite near the Calabash hotel, in the heart of St. Georges Market Square, you can find a large bustling market that the primary destination for local produce and spice producers. For those wishing to learn more about the spices produced on Grenada, be sure to visit the Dougaldston Spice Estate, a historical monument to spice growing and processing history; the Gouyave or the Grenville Nutmeg Processing Station (or both!), which are the largest nutmeg processing stations in the nation; and Mount Edgecombe Plantation, a beautiful private working plantation in St. Mark that produces nearly every fruit, vegetable and spice grown in Grenada.
Chocolate hills
In addition to nearly every spice you can name, dont forget that Grenada also
produces some of the best cocoa and chocolate products in the world. And what better way to spend a day than to be surrounded by acres and acres of cocoa plants and then sample different kinds of chocolate products? From the
Calabash hotel, travel to the centuries-old Belmont Estate in St. Patrick, with its 400 acres of lush rolling hills covered in cocoa plants. Here, cocoa is still produced the traditional way. Guests can tour the cocoa fields by donkey cart, watch the beans be polished and hear about the history of chocolate in Grenada. Every tour ends with a cup of yummy authentic hot cocoa.
