Giving your dog a bath means more than just rinsing it with soap and water
. You have to give them the right care when it comes to grooming or they might just get sick and develop skin and fur problems. Human shampoo and soap is not enough, here are some important items you have to have when it comes to your dogs grooming kit.
Dog shampoo and soap
Dog hair is a little coarse compared to human hair so human shampoo will work, but its not really the best thing to use on them. You can purchase dog shampoo and soap at any pet shop or even at the grocery store these days. The best thing about this product is that its formulated for your dog. Most of the time, it also contains pesticide and anti-pest ingredients that helps keep their coat flea and tick free. Just be sure not to get this on their eyes to avoid any problems.
Dog bathtub
This is really helpful if you have a small dog or a dog that has degenerative myelopathy and cant move around. This stops you from making a mess when giving your dog a bath indoors, especially if its snowing out and you cant give them a bath outside. You can improvise with a baby bath tub or even use your own bath tub.
Collar
You should never take your dogs collar off, even if youre going to give them a bath. Make sure that their collar is sturdy enough and can take on wear and tear. You can use a chain collar but these can get a bit too heavy and might even irritate the dog.
Brush
If you can give your dog a bath regularly, then make sure you take time to brush down their coat. This take out dirt and mud that could have gotten stuck in their fur and it also cleans off any parasites like ticks and fleas. This also helps keep their fur shiny and smooth.
Towels
Dont just let your dog air dry and shake the water off, help them out by towel drying them. Some dogs, like the ones that have degenerative myelopathy, need help when drying themselves off. Make sure that you have a few towels reserved for them. You can just use your old towels and just keep them together with your dogs grooming items.
