Ground cover can be used for weed control. Fabric used for ground cover has different properties and different applications. First talking about applications ground cover aka weed control fabric can be used in landscaping, green houses, nurseries, shade structures etc.

Ground cover is also called weed control fabric because its fabric prevents weed growth and allows air circulation. The fabric protects the roots from the spread of fungus and bacteria. It is permeable to air and water and is resistant to mildew and rotting.

Its specially profiled threads allow water to drain away quickly, reducing pounding. Many grades have colored lines woven into the textile to assist nurserymen neatly layout their stocks. To this end the material is tough enough to withstand reasonable pedestrian traffic in outdoor areas, polythene tunnels and greenhouses. Being a woven product it will be prone to fraying if cut or punctured, however in the UK you could expect the premium products to last for 5 8 years. The virtue of landscape fabrics is that, like black plastic, they serve as clean, durable weed barriers. But unlike black plastic, landscape fabrics permit a certain amount of air, water and nutrients to penetrate to the soil. Also, a layer of organic mulch applied over landscape fabrics will decompose more slowly than it would if allowed to come into direct contact with the soil.weed control fabric or ground cover can also be considered as integral part of shade netting.

Weed Control Fabrics are effective against most weeds, landscape fabrics, in general, are not 100% weed proof. Perennial weeds that are especially difficult to control perennial weeds, like Bermuda grass or nuts edge, may require additional weed control measures. Further, weed seed germination in mulch on top of the fabric is not prevented.
