The Chinese and Japanese tradition of growing bonsai trees dates back to 1000 years ago and has recently become a popular hobby world wide. Bonsai, famous for its one defining characteristic, is a miniature tree. A bonsai tree gives off the appearance of an old and beautiful tree, all in its small form. It is a sensitive plant, but has been known to live up to a 100 years. Just as a regular tree, the bonsai tree will adapt to seasons. In the spring growing new leaves and in the fall, some bonsai trees are known to produce scarlet red leaves, a site to behold for anyone who enjoys fall foliage. Adding a bonsai tree to an office is an ideal way of creating a place where the eyes and mind can rest during a busy and stressful day. Bonsai trees tend to have a calming and serene effect. It is also a perfect and unique addition to a home already filled with plants or as a stand alone wonder.

Caring for a bonsai tree is a delicate process and should be learned before bringing a bonsai tree into the home or office. Bonsai starter trees are an ideal way for someone to start growing these delicate trees. For a newbie to the art of bonsai trees, there are a few bonsai starter trees which are recommended. The Chinese Elm tree, Japanese Green Maple and the Japanese Red Maple are great bonsai starter trees. Bonsai starter trees usually require a little less maintenance. One can learn this unique art with bonsai starter trees and with confidence move on to growing beautiful bonsai trees.

The bonsai tree requires maintenance in order for its shape to be preserved. Regular and carefully pruning of the tree is required on a consistent basis. As with most plants, the bonsai tree needs a certain amount of sunlight in order to grow. A well lit area is desirable and a warm temperature as well. Care must be taken to place this plant in a room with the appropriate temperature, which is about 60 degrees Fahrenheit, anything under 60 degrees may be harmful. High degrees can also be a threat and cause the tree, along with its roots to dry out. After pruning the bonsai tree, all leaves, branches and matter which have fallen around the tree must be removed, if not removed they will decompose and obstruct the tree. Bonsai trees should be trimmed and pruned with special tools made just for that purpose. Trimming them with regular scissors is not recommended and can result in damage being done to the tree.

Bonsai trees need to be kept in shallow containers and need just the right amount of water. Daily watering is required during the spring, summer and fall. During the summer if the temperatures get to be above normal, bonsai trees may need to be watered twice, once in the morning and once in the evening. Over watering, just as same as under watering a bonsai tree can have deadly consequences. Over watering this plant will cause the roots to rot where as under watering will cause them to dry out. Over watering is also an invitation for numerous disease and common pests such as spider mites.

Daily inspection of the bonsai tree is a must for a beginner. By doing so, any arising problems can and will be caught on time. Caring for this special and unique plant can prove to be a fun and rewarding experience.
