Grow Your Own Chillies

Yes you could just get some chillies from your local supermarket but you would probably

end up with generic flavourless fruits that are already quite old. There is nothing like picking your fresh chillies off a plant you have carefully nurtured and seen mature over the weeks.

Here at the Devils Garden we have a wide range of chilli seeds that are rather rare and packed full with flavour and of course heat! If you are a beginner in the chilli world though here are some varieties you could get for yourself such as NuMex Joe E Parker. This is a high yielding chilli plant with delicious mild pods that even children could handle. Ancho Grande chilli peppers are also great to use on a daily basis as it is very flavoursome and provides a gentle heat at the back of the throat.

Long chilli peppers are great for stuffing or grilling on the barbecue so for best results you could grow Georgia Flame chilli pepper or NuMex Big Jim which is one of the most popular type of chilli pepper to have stuffed with cream cheese whilst providing a mild heat.

If you want to crack the heat up a notch then try Golden Cayenne, Jalapeno Early, Santa Fe, Jalapeno Purple Chilli Peppers or Bulgarian Carrot chilli peppers. These are great chopped up and thrown on pizza or to pickle. Black Hungarian and Hungarian Yellow Wax are also fantastic medium hot Chilli Peppers to have with pretty much anything. You could even make your own Mexican Mole sauce using Pasilla Bajio chilli peppers which are part of the holy trinity of chillies in South America. The Anaheim chilli pepper is one of our favourite as it is a great all-rounder.

If you want to up the antes though try Fresno chilli peppers. These are gorgeous red devils that will make a superb chilli con carne or curry. Same thing with Red Cherry and Satans Kiss chilli peppers. Serrano Tampiqueno is a very prolific variety of chillies that are traditionally used to make garlands with but beware of their fiery flesh!

If you want to go all out though then go for any type of habanero, orange, red, chocolate or white, Scotch Bonnets, Bishops Crown or Fatalii which as its name indicates is rather fatal!

With more than 20 varieties to choose from the world is your oyster at the Devils Garden. There is still time to grow your own gorgeous chilli peppers so get planting!
