Growing Grapes at Home for Anyone

Growing grapes at home is not hard to do, anyone can accomplish this

. Whether you are growing grapes as a hobby or growing them commercially, it's all the same. The only difference is the size of your vineyard. When planting grapes at home you will need a place that is sunny and has good air flow. You only need a small space big enough for at least ten plants. Ten plants should produce approximately five gallons of juice. This is enough to produce some wine if that is what you are growing your grapes for. Or maybe you are just growing the grapes to make jelly, jam, juice, or even just to eat. So let's look at some things that we need to know before we start growing grapes at home.

The first thing we need to look at is, what are we going to do with the grapes that we grow? Some grapes are more suitable for wine, where other grapes are better for jams and jellies, while others or more suitable for just eating (table grapes). Therefore, it you can see that it is very important that you know what you are going to use the grapes you grow for.

Wine grapes come in many different varieties. It is best to find out what variety of grape grows best in your area. Some grapes grow good in cold climates, where other need hot weather. Most varieties of grapes prefer hot to cool weather, whereas there are some varieties that do very well in cold climates. So do your homework before planting you grapes to make sure that the one you plant are suitable for you climate.

Another important factor in growing grapes at home is the taste. Just because you have tasted grapes of a certain variety does not mean that the grape will have the same taste when grown at your home. How the grape, grape juice, wine, or jelly taste depends on the type of soil and the area that the grapes are grown in. For example grapes grown in sandy soil will taste different from grapes grown in clay soil. Also, grapes grown in hot climates will taste different from the same grapes grown in cold climates. Therefore, don't expect your wine to taste the same as wine produced from the same grape in another part of the world.

Other aspects of growing grapes are the right fertilizers to make you grapes produce the best. Grapes do not need a real rich soil to grow in. As a matter of fact poorer soil condition may produce the best grape. Vines that are planted in rich soil will make more leaves and vines than those planted in poorer soils, but the grapes in the poorer soil will produce more fruit. Therefore the poorer soil is what you want because you are looking for more fruit and less vines and leaves. Even though your vines produce different tasting grapes than someone else's vines don't be discouraged. The grapes you are growing may produce an award winning wine. The main thing with any hobby is always have fun.

Happy grape growing,
