Growing Green: Building On The Success Of Year One

Were still in training, and theres always a lot to learn

, Jan admits. Weve eliminated some products and added a few new ones as we try to find our way in terms of what products to handle.

EcoInhabit Build

An important addition was Durisol blocks, pivotal to getting EcoInhabit Builds green building reputation out there, especially through Tims recent participation at the recent Green Build 2011 expo.

We added Green Innovations landscape grids, a great alternative to pavement, stone or tarmac surfaces. To complement our AFM and Safecoat paint products, we added Dynamic painting accessories such as paint trays, drop cloths, rollers and brushes made from recycled or organic materials. With removable bristles, brush handles can be used time and again.

Another new product is Masonal Stone Veneers, inch-thick real stone suitable for building exteriors, indoors feature walls and fireplaces. This great item comes in a number of selections and styles, without the weight of other stone applications. Weve also added formaldehyde-free Fibreboard and plywood, which can be ordered through Eco. New flooring materials include Jelinek cork flooring and Nadurra bamboo flooring.

The EcoInhabit Store

We keep trying to add new healthy products to the store, such as our lines of natural cosmetics, so people can just wander in and simply purchase a single healthy item if they choose.

Its all about making your life healthy, one step at a time, Jan explains.

Growing Green The Market Meaford

Acquiring the former 100 Mile Market and moving it to our property has been a great way to introduce people to the rest of EcoInhabit, in terms of healthiness.

When people make the choice to live healthier lives, they often start by changing their diet and purchasing organic and local foods. Yet the fact that our home environments can make us sick is still a new concept for many people. When people come into the store, theyre often drawn to the home building side of EcoInhabit.

The Market has fared well, and, looking forward, we hope to combine the Market and Eco through a teaching kitchen that will also showcase our kitchen cabinetry building.

As well as attending Green Build, we had a booth at the Green Living Show in Toronto in April, which was a great learning experience. On May 5-6, 2012, we will have a booth at the Thornbury Home and Garden Show.

Community involvement through our Green Drinks sessions and Transition Town Meaford movement has been important to us, and we will continue to develop in that area.

Were enjoying being an information centre for the community and providing a place where people can exchange ideas, says Jan. Weve learned a lot from the folks who have come into the store to shop or to become part of these groups. The past year has been fun and exciting and informative. Were learning every day.
