Growing Plants Indoors Can Bring A Cheerful Touch To Chilly Days
If you enjoy gardening, you may be wistfully thinking of warm summer days as the frigid weather of winter approaches
. Usually as the beginning of fall comes it brings with it the close of the gardening season, unless of course the climate you are currently living in is warm all through the whole year. If you do not want to have to wait until the warm days of springtime arrive to enjoy your gardening hobby, why not plan to grow some plants indoors this year? If you want to shake off that winter gloom, then having a few nice plants indoors that you can watch growing may just do the trick.
Choosing Plants for Indoor Gardens
There are many different plants you can successfully grow inside. If you do not have a "green thumb," you might want to start off with some easy-to-grow houseplants, such as a philodendron, pothos or ivy. Even if your house doesn't have much light coming in, you might still do very well growing those plants. However, if you want to grow plants such as herbs, flowers or even vegetables indoors during the winter months, you will probably want to add a couple of specialized light fixtures. While there are lights out there that are specifically designed for giving the correct kind of light for the plants to grow well, you can actually do fairly well for yourself using simple fluorescent lights. Just suspend a fluorescent light fixture from the ceiling over the table, and you'll have the perfect spot to grow a wide range of plants. Or, arrange a collection of potted herbs on a sunny kitchen or dining room windowsill.
Making Use of Your Indoor Garden
You may benefit from your home garden in many different ways; it really depends on the plants you decide to use. If you are looking for some fresh ideas for things to present to your friends and relatives, you could choose a few household plants that could be divided up and used as "starts" for growing new plants to give as gifts. Or, try pressing some of the flowers you are growing indoors, which may be used to create interesting wall art when exhibited in picture frames. You could even have nice fresh seasonings and herbs for use in cooking all winter when you simply grow some inside. Your herbs could be dried and used for other things too, such as potpourri mixtures to give as gifts, or even bath sachets. Lettuce and some other salad greens for fresh salads are another thing that's easy to grow indoors, especially in the cooler temperatures of the basement.
Adding Some Decorative Details to Your Garden
If you are one of those people who chooses to set aside an entire room just for your winter indoor garden, then you may want to decorate that space in such a way that it truly feels like a garden. Get some picture frames and fill them with prints of flowers and plants and then hang them on the walls. You may also want to add a little indoor water feature, such as the sort that can be displayed on a table. This room might even become a warm and snug place to relax when it is chilly outside when you add a few simple touches like a comfy chair, a blanket, and also a good light for reading.
So get started right away on that charming indoor garden you have been dreaming of.
