GSM is the short term for Global System for Mobile communications and is a very famous
digital cellular system being the worlds most widely used mobile phone technology. Cell phones use a GSM network by searching for its signals in the nearby area. GSM offers their users wider international roaming capabilities than other U.S, for everyday purposes enabling a cell phone to be called a world phone.
GSM technology. In 1982 the Groupe Spcial Mobile or simply called GSM was created by the European Conference of Postal and Telecommunications Administrations (CEPT) for the purpose of designing a pan-European mobile technology.
According to a research carried by the GSM Association (GSMA), approximately 80% of the people in the world use GSM technology for making calls which catches the interests of the mobile communications industry worldwide. The 80% of the world make nearly 3 billion people globally. GSM carriers normally cover rural areas much better than the CDMA carriers because they have roaming contracts with other GSM carriers and that too often without any roaming charges.
The GSM technology is a circuit-switched system that splits each 200kHz channel into eight 25kHz time-slots. The basic process includes digitization and compression of the data, consequently sending it down through a channel with two other streams of user data, each in its own time slot. The GSM operational bands in the US include in the 1.9GHz and 850MHz range and for Europe the range is in between 900MHz and 1.8GHz bands.
A brief comparison of GSM and CDMA technologies is given below.
1.CDMA phones are designed such that they catch signals from a single cell phone service carrier while in a GSM cell phone any SIM card from any service provider can be used.
2.A CDMA phone is tied to a single number thus making you unable to change your number. This means that your cell phone will not work with any other number and you will not be able to join any other carrier network as well.
3.What makes a GSM technology to meet with international standards is due to the fact that it is used in more than 277 different countries around the world. However, a CDMA phone is limited in use to US and very few other Asian countries.
4.Furthermore, more data can be transferred using a GSM carrier than with a CDMA carrier.
5.The two other major advantages that can be obtained from GSM technology is prevention of fraud and roaming readiness.
With these points known it becomes easier for one to decide whether he or she wants to buy a CDMA or a GSM handset.
GSM technology. But a GSM carrier offers better functions to those people who are very much on the go and is definitely a better choice than a CDMA carrier.
