Guadix Spain
Overview
The town of Guadix is located in the Granada province in southern Spain. The population of this town is about 21000. This town is lively with its own characteristics. Its history can be traced to Phoenicians and Romans. In order to mine the silver in the hills surrounding this town, Julius Caesar constructed a Roman town here. During the Reconquest, this town played an important role.
This town is very popular for its cave houses; half the city's population in this town lives underground in these cave houses. People of Andalusia have preferred to live underground from the days of Moors because they found that this was the best way of avoiding the summer heat waves. These cave houses are not primitive dwellings. They are as good as any normal Spanish residence; some are quite posh with marble floors, modular kitchens, disco, internet, fax, etc. The cave district is known as the "Barrio Troglodyte". People living in these cave houses are called the "troglodytes"; these people are not only friendly but they are also proud of the cave houses in which they live.
Guadix is situated on a plateauin the Sierra Nevada mountain foothills. Ancient walls surround this city and these walls were part of a Moorish castle that is in ruins. The cathedral in this city was built on a mosque site between the 16th and 18th centuries. It represents three different styles of architecture Renaissance, Gothic and Baroque.
There was a time when this city was popular for the manufacture of cutlery of all sorts. However at present its revenue comes from earthenware, hats and hempen goods. Trading is also practiced in cotton, wool, corn, flax and liqueurs.
The author of the novel The three cornered hat was born in this place in 1833.
