Clean battery terminals are important for a car to perform at its best

. Battery terminals that are covered with dust and build-ups might prevent the car from getting the full battery transmission from the terminals. When the terminals get filthy, they might cause the engine or battery to easily die down.

If a car is not starting, then there is a possibility of a costly problem such as a failed starter. Or on the other hand, the problem can be as uncomplicated like the battery not initializing properly. By knowing the process of cleaning battery terminals, the dirt and mud upsurge can be easily observed around the terminals which are affecting the cars performance. -Wire-bristled brush

-Screw driver

-Electrical tape

First of all, the cars bonnet has to be opened and secured. Disconnect the battery terminals from the cars battery. Always remember to wear safety gear like protective gloves for preventing contact with battery acid. To scrub off any observable corrosion around and within the ring terminal and exposed, use the wire-bristle brush. The inside of the ring terminal would have to be scraped using a screwdriver if the wire-bristled brush does not show effective results.

The surplus dirt and dust left by the brush or screwdriver cleaning must be blown away. If the battery terminals are properly scraped, then a shiny and clean metal will be seen rather than a corrosive material.

The wires going to the battery terminals have to be inspected. If the covering of the copper wire contains signs of corrosion in the form of greenish or whitish powder, then this should be also cleaned. Now, slice open the wire housing about the size of half inch from the top with a razor blade. If corrosion is visible, continue to cut until the clean copper is visible. Remove any corroded wire and leave sufficient wire that can easily get to the terminal. An electrical tape has to be used to seal the wire. If this is impossible, then the best available option is to purchase a brand new cable.

As an alternate way for cleaning the battery terminals, pour baking soda and water solution or a can of cola on the terminals. The solution of baking soda and water and the acid in the cola will eat the corroded material around the terminals and allows an improved connection between the battery and the battery terminals.

Once cleaning is complete, first replace the positive clamp and then the negative clamp should be replaced. Use a wrench of appropriate size to tighten them. The rubber boot or plastic shield covering the positive terminal can now be replaced.
