Guide To Installing Solar Panels On Flat Roofs

Among all alternative green energy sources, solar energy is known to be very effective

. Most people are moving from 100% traditional energy sources to using green energy sources. Most natural sources of energy are fast depleting causing people to switch to greener alternatives. In states like Hawaii where energy is becoming very expensive, more and more folks are motivated to install solar panels for home and commercial purposes. Solar power is a great choice for any scale of use. Especially for homes, solar power is the best alternative source of energy. So if youre thinking of installing solar panels on your roof, read on to understand how to go about it.

Flat roofs make for the ideal place to install solar panels. A flat roof also provides flexibility to fix adjustable panels that can be pointed in the direction of the sun. The surface area of a flat roof is bigger than slant roofs making it more ideal for installing panels.

Instructions

1. Perform a due-diligence on the roof before proceeding with the solar panel installtion. This is to ensure there are no potential moisture problems or existing cracks or leaks on the roof. Also inspect the roof for sags or other abnormalities like depression on the roof. If you detect any problems, it is best to get them repaired before starting the installation.

2. The installation works best if it faces south. In an east-west installation, the amount of electricity generated will be considerably lower. Before marking a place even in a south facing installation, make sure there are no objects that may cast a shadow. Solar panels work best when they are in a spot, which has constant exposure to the sun throughout the year.

3. Once you have earmarked the area for installation, start with installing the base of the solar panel racks. Bolt them to the roof using lag bolts. Depending on the strength of your roof, you can drill holes and then bolt the base. After fixing the base, make sure it is waterproofed by applying seal all around.

4. Attach the racks to the base that was bolted in the previous step. The racks are fixed in a way that they are flat during summer and can be tilted to an angle during winter for maximum exposure to sunlight.

5. The next step is to fix the solar panels in the designated space. PV installations look perfect when they are installed parallel to the roof and the ground. Ensure that the panels are installed based on the circuit diagram provided. There may be a combination of series and parallel circuit required for installation.

6. Lastly connect the wires behind each of the panels on the roof and to the inverter. Panels are provided with wires behind them. Ensure that each of the wires is connected to the next correctly. To finish the system, connect the DC wiring from the panels into the inverter installed in your home.

The last step would be to connect the buildings main electrical panel and the utility meter to the solar panels. All you need to do now is power up the system and it will start generating green electricity.
