Guide to a Better Golf Swing

The Game:

Who doesn't love going out on a nice sunny day with your buddies for a round of golf. You can't wait for Saturday morning when it's still cool out and hitting some balls. You get to the clubhouse, put your golf shoes on and pay your golf dues. Next you head out to the driving range and start hitting some balls. You hit a few duffers but also hit some great shots. Now we are ready for the course. On the way to the first tee we are confident all is going to go well until you see the starter and other people lining up for their turn to Tee off. Unfortunately your turn is before most of the crowd. You and your buddies decide the order of play and now it's your turn. Standing at the Tee suddenly you think everyone is watching you. You stiffen up and start praying you will hit a nice drive. All you want is that nice drive so you can get to your second shot and start to relax. Does this sound like you? It happens to all of us. The fact is that most of the people watching you are feeling the same as you when it's their turn. I know it's hard but you have to forget about your surroundings and just concentrate on your golf just the way you did when you hit a nice one at the driving range.

Swing:

What kind of swing should I have? Have you ever watched the swing replays of professional players on the PGA? It seems each player has his or her own swing but it's usually a lot different than the weekend golfer. How far is their back swing? What does their stance look like? Look at how they follow through. Next time you are out golfing you should bring your camera with you. Most digital cameras these days can shoot video. Have you golf partner video you. (They will appreciate if you video them also). When back at home watch your swing on your video and you will see so much that you will now be able to correct. There are many books such asGolf Is a Nutty Game that will help you correct your swing. Correcting it is not always the hard part. You just need to know what it is that needs correcting.

Drive:

What's your drive like? Usually the problem drives are the slices and hooks. The person who hits a short drive usually hits it straight and doesn't get into trouble. Everyone loves a long drive but when it's long into the woods then you would be better with the short straight drive. Better taking an extra shot because of your short drive than starting off with a two stoke penalty because of lost ball. If you want to hit it long and straight then you need some guidance. There are lots of books out there to help you. I personally like this one.The Simple Golf Swing

Short Game:

Your short game is an area you can easilyloosestrokes. Maybe you had a nice drive only to blow it on your approach. Feeling confident with your drive you pull out your fiveironand duff it. Did you plan out your shot? Probably not. Notice the pros when they are hitting to the green. Do they just grab a club and go at it. No, they check the yardage, check the wind, and decide if it will be a soft five or will they have to really go for it. Most of us will have most success with a softer shot so why not take an extra club length and go with that.Golf management is a must especially with your short game. If you really think about each shot you will be surprised how many strokes you will take off your score.

Putting:

Putting is another part of the game where lots of strokes are added to your game needlessly. You just made a three put. That's like missing your drive all together and having to take it again. Notice people who go to the driving range and then straight to the Tee to start their game. What happened to a little putting practice? Plus it's free! You just spent eight bucks on balls for the driving range and didn't bother with the free putting green. You need to put a few on the practice green. I know, a lot of practice greens are different than the ones at each hole but it will give you an indication if it's slow or fast. The practice greens are cut the same time as the others and knowing the speed will help you greatly. You may say "I'll find out on the first hole" but why waist a shot when you don't have to.

19th Hole:

When your game is done it seems that even if you had a bad game you are now talking about your next golf outing.. Golf is a funny sport. You can get so frustrated but you can't wait until your next game. You're at the clubhouse talking about your great shots. You're thinking about that driver in the shop for sale. Next weekend it starts all over. Like I said there are a lot of golf book that don't cost much and can really help. The main thing is that we are out there with our friends getting some fresh air and exercise.Remember, don't get too down on yourself. Just have fun!
