The packing guidelines that a courier has in place are not just there for their own protection

. In fact, it is much more accurate to say that those guidelines are actually there for your protection instead. This will be a list of rules that you are expected to follow whenever preparing a package for shipment with their company.

The rules are going to be slightly different from courier to courier. Additionally, couriers may have different sets of guidelines for different kinds of shipments. For instance, they may have different international shipping guidelines as opposed to domestic. In all cases though, there are some basic rules which are usually a part of such guidelines.

First of all, they usually require that you make sure that all breakable items are packages in such a way so that the item cannot move within the package. This means stuffing your box with packing kernels or the like the make sure the item cannot break. Anything which might be able to spill or contains any liquid at all must also be sealed properly so it cannot leak.

They will also indicate clearly that labelling is a very important part of their shipping guidelines. This is because incorrect labels are a very common reason for packages going astray. You must ship usually in unmarked packages that don't have any old addresses visible in any way on the package.

Heavy items should usually be double boxed. Larger, heavier items will usually be better placed in a crate rather than in a box. That way, if the package gets wet it won't be in danger of giving out and dropping the item onto the ground.

The primary reason that it is so important that you follow all of these guidelines is for insurance reasons. That is because most couriers' insurance policies will state that they are not valid if all courier guidelines are not being adhered to. Most cases where you make a claim will require you to present the original packaging of the shipment in order to prove that was the case. This means if you're shipping something which is very valuable, it is doubly important that you make sure that you've followed all of the packing guidelines.
