Guidelines For Watering Orchids Correctly
Due to the orchid plant having beautiful blooms
, colors, sizes and a huge variety of species to choose from, they have become a favourite for people from all walks of life. For an orchid to thrive, it will need to be living in the correct environment to do, just the same as any plant. Knowing how to properly water an orchid is a major factor for all orchid lovers. Because orchids have thousands of species and the right amount of water differs for each kind, it is absolutely necessary to perform the proper research for your particular plant. Its also very important to have a good foundation of knowledge on orchids in general.
The orchid originates from the tropical and lush areas of earth, and are accustomed to lots of rain and high humidity levels. Most orchids can actually live very happily with a humidity level of 80%. Obviously, this would be terribly uncomfortable for the average person so another solution needs to be implemented for your indoor orchid. To appropriately humidify them, they will need to be supplied with a steady flow of water. This can be very easily accomplished by simply having pebbles placed in a saucer, then placing the orchid pot on the pebbles and finally watering the pebbles. The only thing you need to be aware of is that the water never actually touches the orchid pot itself. This method actually creates an artificial high-humidity habitat for your orchids to prosper in!
If the humidity solution just mentioned isnt put into place though, its quite common for over-watering to occur. This is one of the biggest mistakes that an orchid owner can ever make. The majority of people assume that if the potting bark looks dry then the plant will need to be watered this is NOT true most of all for an orchid. It may appear dry but the bark itself actually holds water. This means that if you own an indoor orchid, then the potting bark needs to become completely dry before the plant requires more watering. You just need to water your orchid once each one or two weeks and not too much either. In their natural environment, some species of orchid grow on tree trunks and branches and its quite normal for their root system to totally dry out before it rains again. Fertilizing is also to be applied a little at a time and is available from most gardening supply outlets. By watering and fertilizing an orchid correctly then anyone, expert and beginner alike, can enjoy the benefits of a healthy and magnificent orchid.
If the proper steps are followed, your orchid will lead a long and healthy life. This means the right amounts of water, potting bark, sunlight and shade and also fertilizing from time to time. Orchids can sometimes be a little headstrong and easily upset, but it doesnt need to be difficult to get them to like you again.
