The motorized fan that sits at the back of the base (the largest circular part of the hair dryer that houses the motor and fan) looks like a waterwheel. The fan is firmly attached to the motor, which is its source of power.

After electricity is supplied to the motor it begins to spin, causing the attached fan to spin also. The fan pulls air from outside through the small vents that sit on the side or in the back of the hair dryer. The vents, referred to as air inlets, have a protective screen that only allows air in. The air is then blown in the direction of the heating coils.

The air that is brought into the dryer is then pushed through the barrel and onto your hair, although there is the crucial element that takes place first: the heating of the air.

A coiled wire on an insulating board is the main mechanic for heating the air that is pulled into the hair dryer. The wire is made of a material that is a poor conductor of electricity, so when an electrical charge is sent through it, it becomes hot instead of conducting the charge. It is also resistant to rust, which is important because many other materials will quickly oxidize when exposed to the amount of heat that the wire endures.

The heating unit sits in the barrel in the direction of the blowing air. As the air passes through, it is heated by the heating coil.

The hotness of the air targeted on to the hair can be controlled by a switch provided on the hair dryer for this purpose. These hair dryers are thing of necessity for those who wish to shape up their hair without loosing much time.
