Guild Wars 2 Review In Progress

Instead of semi-aimlessly wandering the countryside looking for meager wages from

troubled farmers and short-staffed military encampments, I headed into town and started paying some serious attention to the leveling of my two professions, leatherworking and jewelry. I'd picked them up earlier in the week because I figured the armor, item enhancements, and bags I could get from leatherworking would prove helpful as I leveled, and I admittedly picked up jewelry just because I knew how much of a cash cow it can be in that other MMORPG -- you know, the one that's about to be overrun with pandas. Because of the Trading Post (aka auction house) issues I mentioned on the first day, though, I largely set them aside in the hopes that ArenaNet would fix the Trading Post before I needed to take a look at them.

It's Thursday now, and there's still no Trading Post. There's not even any mail service at the time of writing because ArenaNet took it down recently after some reported bugs. The most hilarious bit about all this is that Guild Wars 2 has no way to trade items between characters except through the in-game mail (yes, you read that right), buy guild wars 2 gold and so now most of us are hoarding all the materials we come across and farming what materials we need. I'd grown quite used to not having a Trading Post over the last couple of days, although the combination of a missing Trading Post and the lack of any way to send items to other characters is really starting to tear at my nerves. For me, at least, the lack of any way to give my friend a few spare stacks of rawhide squares or an upgrade that dropped is one of the most bitter marks on an otherwise deeply engaging game.

Who Says Work Has to Feel Like a Job?

But get this: crafting is actually fun! So many other MMORPGs require us to make piles and piles of crap that no one will ever seriously consider using in order to get to the good stuff, but if I hadn't already leveled so far ahead (I'm now level 40), I could see myself using almost every piece of gear I make. In fact, I'm already using a lot of it. Leatherworkers aren't just limited to making leather gear in Guild Wars 2, so I've already equipped some of the eight-slot bags I've made and upgraded my level 30 gears with item enhancements that grant me bonuses to vitality or power (since I can't get anything better in the absence of a Trading Post). There's even a welcome tinge of immersion in that you have to go to crafting locations to work with your gear, which currently creates a cool sense of an industrious community. On my server, I and a lot of other Norns hang around Twinspur Haven in the Wayfarer Foothills because all the crafting stations are within a couple of feet of each other.

Yet the best aspect of crafting is the ability to discover new items, which indeed is how you find most of the useful stuff. The recipes that appear in the crafting panel as you level are just the supplies in most cases. Let's say I was making rawhide shoulderpads for my character with boosts to vitality. I'd have to first make a rawhide shoulder panel and rawhide shoulder padding with refined rawhide and jute, and then I'd have to match that with an insignia with +4 vitality that I'd also made separately. I didn't know this at the time. I simply made all the items that I had materials for in my inventory, and switched over to the Discovery tab to see what I could make with what I had. Since there are four slots, I just started dropping items in until a notice popped up that I'd found a successful match with three of them, and suddenly I'd learned how to make shoulders that could have kept me alive longer if I were still in the level 12 range. It's an immensely rewarding process, since there's a little bit of excitement every time you had back to the crafting station with a bag full of mats. idlt0903
