Guitar Learn By Ear - Important Tips To Develop A Better Ear For Learning Guitar

One of the interesting things about self-taught guitarists is their ability to learn by ear

. Now, not every guitarist can do this, but most classically trained professionals are taught to read music and practice sight-reading for quick adaptation of music.

However, playing the guitar and learning by ear is an amazing talent that can help you learn more songs than you imagined in less time than you would expect.

One of the basic ideas of learning songs by ear can be achieved by playing with your eyes closed. Taking your sight out of the equation will heighten your listening ability and train you to recognize the similiarities in music genres.

But, you can't just dive into any song you want with your eyes closed. Here's a basic formula to follow:

* Practice at your level. Go from easier to more difficult tunes.

If you want to learn by ear with your eyes closed, you need to start at the bottom where it's easiest. Only when you are able to play a song perfectly at least three times through, then you can try something of a higher difficulty.

* Listen for the changes.

Try listening to a song without playing the guitar and focus on the changes. Knowing when one chord or note progression melts into the next is a great feat that most guitarists have a lot of trouble with.

* Feel the distance of the frets.

You can really start to get excited about learning guitar by ear when you start to identify the fret distances. This ability can only come when you've played a particular song a lot.

Take one song and play it over and over again. Eventually, you'll feel the change in each section coming out almost involuntarily and you won't rely on your sight.

Now, the really difficult part of the process of learning guitar by ear is forcing yourself to work out music without guitar tabs or sheet music. If you haven't done this before, prepare for a little frustration because that's expected for a beginner.

But... there's a system for figuring out a tune:

* Start with the basic frame of the song, which is usually the chords.

The chords are the easiest thing to figure out and in most radio-hit songs, there are not many of them. Use your ability to identify the changes in the music and try to find the chords on the guitar neck.

You have to begin with trial and error, but after you attempt a few songs, your errors become less and less.

* Practice the more detailed rhythm changes.

After you've figured out the basic chords that create the skeleton of the song, you can begin to understand the rhythmic approach to those chords and how they transition into each other. Finding those chords was half the work, so this part should feel like a snap if your strumming skills are up to par.

* Go after the lead sections.

Lead sections are considered some of the more difficult things to learn by ear on the guitar only because most guitarists have a hard time breaking down the riffs into small manageable sections. Train your ears to recognize the small licks that create the entire riff and you'll have a better chance of pulling apart the lead sections.

Learning the guitar by ear can take months to learn, but it's not unreachable. Even if it takes you longer than expected to develop, you'll have learned a skill that is ten times more desirable than someone who learns by documentation alone.
