Guitar Lesson -- Arpeggiated Picking Part 2
Here are some more picking techniques for the G
, C and the E chord. This is also part of what is called arpeggiated picking, but this style is used as a rhythm technique rather than as a lead technique
Let's do a couple for a version of the G chord first. Put the entire chord down first. [ 3 2 0 0 3 3 ]. Note the extra "D" on the 2nd string.
#1 Use alternate picking. Gradually pick up speed until you can play fast, but remember to play cleanly at any given tempo before moving on. This is meant to be a single measure in 4-4 time. Repeat exercise over and over.

D-----------0--------------0-------------------

E------3----------------------------------------
#2 Use alternate picking. Put entire chord [ 3 2 0 0 0 3 ] down using fingers 2, 3, and 4, leaving the 1st finger free to play additional notes for a Gsus4 effect.

Here's one for the E chord [ 0 2 2 1 0 0 ]. Put down the whole chord.

D------------------------------------------------
A----------------2--------------------2----------

This is one that also uses the Esus4. Place the E chord down, and use the 4th finger as required. Play with alternate picking.

G--------------------1--------------------2------

A--------------2---------------------2------------
E----0--------------------0-----------------------
Again, make sure that you play with alternate picking, and start slowly at first. Be able to play these cleanly and consistently before increasing the tempo.
Here's a good one for the C chord [ 3 3 2 0 1 0 ]. Use the 4th finger on the low E string.

D----------------2--------------------2-----------

E---------------------------3---------------------
#2 Here's one with Csus2 or C2. Remember to put down the whole chord [ 3 3 2 0 1 0 ]. List up or put down 2nd finger as needed.
E----------------------------------------------
B--------------------1-------------------1-----
G----------0-------------------0---------------
D---------------2--------------------0---------

E-------------------------2--------------------
All of these sound really great when played fast, but yet again, remember to start slow. You should also experiment with your own patterns.
Alternate arpeggio picking is a great rhythm guitar technique that, with practice, you can use to really spice up your playing.
