Guitar Lesson For Kids -- How To Practice The Guitar

Have you ever heard of the phrase "Practice makes perfect"

? It really should read "Perfect practice makes perfect". Well, there's a problem - None of us are perfect.

So how are you supposed to practice playing your guitar?

The standard amount of time that most music instructors seem to agree on for beginners is 1/2 hour a day for 6 days a week. Does this mean that you should stop after 1/2 hour if you feel like going longer? No. Does this mean that if you feel that you have done well with your lesson after 20 minutes that you should still keep going? No again.

The goal here is to master the material - whatever time it takes.

One of the problems that we all have to face when we practice is that all to often, we view practicing as if we were on the way to our execution. It almost seems like a punishment. Your mom or your dad say "Ok, it's time to practice!", and you say to yourself "Oh man, I don't want to practice right now..." But practicing is how you get better, so now what?

The ability to make music on an instrument is special - so treat yourself as being special for even trying. But it takes time and effort. If it was too easy everyone would be doing it. If everyone were doing it then it wouldn't be so doggone special. So the first thing you must do is to have a special attitude about practicing. Practicing is something that you want to do to reach your goal of playing well. So it starts with attitude - or how you feel about practicing.

Sometimes your lessons, especially in the beginning, may seem really easy, and sometimes they seem really hard. When this happens try dividing up the lesson into small pieces and master it one step at a time. Then start putting the pieces together. This works really well when you are trying to learn to read music, or are trying to learn switching between chords.

Be stubborn about getting it right, but don't worry about making mistakes. We all make them. And if you have a problem understanding something don't be shy about asking your teacher. If you are doing an on-line course, or if you are doing a course that you got through a website, contact them with your question. They should be able to clear things up for you.

Lastly, make it fun! Somehow. Some way. Remember where all of this effort is taking you. You will be making music - and that's special.
