Guitar Picking Hand - Quick And Easy Tips To Improve Your Picking

Beginning the guitar can be a little frustrating when you realize that your fret

hand has to work hard making all these note formations while your guitar picking hand needs to be racing up and down on the strings. If you haven't played any sort of musical instrument before, the idea of your hands operating independently of one another might seem tough.

However, with some honest focus on the simple techniques like double-picking, finding your comfortable pick position, and using the right muscles, your picking can improve tremendously. Here are a few quick and effective tips that will explain how to improve your picking hand.

1. Keep your fingers loose on the guitar pick, without dropping the pick of course.

If your guitar picking hand is tightly gripped to your pick, you might find your movement on the strings isn't as agile as you would like. You can fix this easily by just loosening up your grip so your muscles aren't so tense.

2. Practice double-picking.

When you have the mindset of playing very fast sections on the guitar, you need to be double-picking every chance that you get. If you're not doing it already, you need to be striking the guitar strings with down-strokes and up-strokes to actually double the speed of your guitar picking hand.

3. Confine all the movement to your wrist and fingers.

You might make the mistake of using your forearm to really strum those strings hard, but you're actually doing too much and restricting your progress. Keep all the movement in just your wrist and fingers and you'll find that with some practice, you can really zip through longer and more difficult riffs.

4. Find a comfortable pick position.

Not everyone grips the guitar pick the same way, so that means you need to find what's comfortable. Experiment with your guitar picking hand by changing how many fingers you use and the distance you hold the pick from the tip.

5. Single out your picking hand for difficult riffs.

Sometimes you'll come across guitar licks that are just too rough for you to attempt with both hands immediately. Start by only practicing with your picking hand so you can get the basic motions and then add your fret hand later.

6. Do very long monotonous runs of just picking for good practice.

When I'm sitting down and watching television, sometimes I'll pull out my guitar and just put my guitar picking hand to work for at least an hour. The next time you have some time to kill and you're near your instrument, pull it out and hit the same note for awhile.

You'll be amazed at how much your picking will improve. Just make sure that no one else is around or you just might drive them nuts.

Getting your guitar picking hand to work well with your fret hand is going to be a struggle, but once they work like a team, playing will become so much easier. Try these tips out for yourself and get your picking hand loose, strong, and moving at maximum speed.
