Guitar Playing Tips For Newbies

Everyone has a different reason for wanting to learn how to play guitar

. Some people dream about being able to play a song that they really enjoy, or perhaps they hope to imitate their favorite guitarists. Others want to impress their friends and family with their new found skills. Whatever your reasons are, here are a few simple tips to help you get started:

Do it yourself or take lessons

Some people are more comfortable learning at their own pace, like I was. Others will do better with the proper instruction. I would suggest that taking lessons is the fastest way to learn how to play guitar, because your instructor can help to show you the basics such as correct hand placement and the various beginner chords. These are important elements to learning to play the guitar, and proper basics are a must for any good guitarist.

Be patient

Learning the guitar takes time, no matter how talented someone is. You will need a great deal of patience to learn even the basic fundamentals such as tuning your guitar, reading the music tabs and the proper strumming techniques. Dont expect that you will learn everything the first week. This is easily the number one reason why so many would be guitarist foolishly quit forever.

Use proper playing posture

If you are not using proper form, you will get sloppy habits and never be the best guitarist you can possibly be. This all starts with how you hold the guitar. You should be sitting down with the guitar resting on your lap. You should also be using a soft pick which will be more comfortable and makes it much easier to strum. Be sure to grip the pick firmly, but dont squeeze it too tightly.

Practice makes perfect

Of course the best tip of all is that you must practice playing the beginner chords over and over until you have them fully mastered. Try to play for at least an hour a day for the first few weeks, until you are comfortable playing a few easy chords without referring to the tab sheets.

It will take time, but if you stick with it and practice, you will notice that within a few short months your guitar playing skills will have come a very long way!
