Guns of the Patriots - Video Games

The Metal Gear Solid franchise has arguably been one of the absolute best, if not THE best, of the video game franchises to emerge in the last decade and a half or so. While we don't get MGS games at a rapid rate, when a new one comes out, it is always a major event, and there are many reasons for this. Always pushing the Playstation's capabilities to its limits, these games continually break ground in their presentation and their immersiveness. There is no other game, franchise or not, that is stylistically comparable to these games in any way. They are peerless, epic games with an intensity that is both unique and unparalleled. Therefore, after finally getting my PS3 a few weeks ago, there was little doubt as to what my first purchase was going to be.

I'm very happy to report that, after beating the game last night, Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, maintains tradition of greatness that I've come to expect from MGS, and is a worthy conclusion to Solid Snake's 20+ years in the video game universe. Technically, the game is flawless. Commanding Snake through those glorious HD levels was a thrill. The graphics are vivid and detailed, and give the feel of the game a level of immersion that really wasn't possible before. The sound makes your heart race and the music score is as excellent as ever. Some of the action cut scenes we're just incredible, putting anything I've seen come out of Hollywood recently to shame. There were no glitches or bugs that I noticed. MGS has always been one of the best in the biz when it comes to presentation, and this one is no different.

The gameplay, while taking more of a 3rd person perspective rather than the traditional overhead view, is slightly refined, but still feels very much like the other entries in the series. But with the PS3's amazing technological capabilities, everything is kicked up a notch. I liked the fact that I was forced to do more shooting in this game. However, this is still primarily a stealth game, and to conquer the levels in the most efficient fashion (and in my opinion, the most satisfying fashion as well), you will need to keep your noticibility down and your awareness up. The boss fights, once again, are epic & amazing. There was a battle against a flying boss in the Eastern Europe act that was just stunning in its scale. Metal Gear Solid has some of the greatest, most intense boss battles anywhere, and this entry is no different. Along the way, there are many useful gadgets and ways to customize your weapons that will aid you in your mission. Lots of reviewers have gone into detail on those, so I won't. But down to the very smallest details, this is a game that was a labor of love, and it always shows.

And lastly, there is the story. Gamers can argue the various strengths and weaknesses of the MGS series, but to me, there is simply no dispute...Metal Gear has told the absolute best story in the history of video games. And this game draws together all the elements from the previous MGS games (as well as the old school NES Metal Gear games and the ones for the portable systems) and wraps it all up in a very satisfying fashion. In relation to this, I've seen a lot of talk as to whether this game would work for someone unfamiliar with the franchise. My vote would be "no". There is simply too much here that ties back to the previous entries. It was those references and the way this game ties up and concludes it all, that contributed so much to its greatness for me. It's like reading "The Return of the King" without reading the first two Lord of the Rings volumes first. It can be done, but the amount that would be missed is just too great.

MGS4: Guns of the Patriots is a stellar offering to owners of the PS3. I absolutely loved the game and couldn't wait to get home from work in the evenings to play it. The story was riveting and the conclusion was worthy of the franchise. The game was just as addicting and intense as ever, and seeing the evolution of the series into the world of high definition is a wonder. To any fan of the series, this is a no-brainer. I'm glad this was my first PS3 game. It will be a tough act to follow.
