Gutters: A Necessity In Every Home
Gutters are one of the features of the home that some homeowners do not feel the need for
, especially if they live in a place that experiences very little rainfall throughout the year. When constructing a home, builders sometimes decide to leave gutters out to save money. Homeowners, to cut down costs on maintenance and cleaning also do not want to install gutters. They also feel that if they moved into a home that does not have gutters then why the need to install them when previous homeowners survived without them.
Throughout the year our homes encounter different weather conditions. Constant rain becomes a threat when it is absorbed by our home's exterior envelope. For example, most homes are 1000 square feet on a single floor and when rain falls, water becomes concentrated in a thin line at the bottom of the roof. This may cause damage to the home and at the same time be a safety hazard.
The main function of a gutter is to direct water away from your home. If water accumulates at the base of your home and enters the foundation, potential damage can be seen. To install gutters in your home is a safety precaution and at the same time will save you money in the long run.
Gutters protect our homes by the following:
* Prevents leaks in basements or crawl spaces by channelling water to another direction.
* Prevents damage to your landscapes and prevents soil erosion.
* You can avoid constant cleaning of the sidings of your home. When water splashes into the dirt this is often caught by the sidings of the home which creates a mess.
* Strong rains may hit decks and door entrances that may accumulate and cause wood rot.
* Your safety may be compromised because without gutters as water may accumulate in walkways and make it difficult for you to walk in.
* Water that may enter windows may cause stains and damage the interior walls of the home.
* Water that is absorbed by wood becomes a feeding ground for mold.
* Painted surfaces in a home are damaged when constant contact to rain is experienced.
Gutters prevent water damage to homes, which is why it is important to have them installed. If you are not able to have them installed then here are some alternatives you can choose from if your roof has an overhang of at least 6 inches beyond your walls:
* Have a concrete apron poured around the foundation of your home.
* Gravel and stone can be used to catch rain water. A drainage system must be installed for this alternative to work.
* Install a rain diverter. This may be placed over the front door to prevent people coming in or out of the home does not get wet.
