Gynecomastia: You'll Know It If You Have It

You may have never heard of gynecomastia, but if you're a man and you have it

, then you surely know what it is.

Gynecomastia is a medical condition produced by many different factors that results in males growing breasts that can closely resemble those of a female. While they do not typically get as large and shapely as women's do, they can certainly reach the point of being noticeable, often making the men who suffer from the condition extremely uncomfortable.

While gynecomastia is not incredibly common, it can happen in a number of different types of cases. Most commonly it is found in newborn babies as a result of having received an abundance of female hormones from their mothers. It is not overly noticeable during this timeframe and usually goes away fairly easily and quickly.

The condition can also show up in adolescent boys and elderly men as well, although this is far less common. In adolescents, it is typically caused by disease or an issue with the individual's metabolism. Those who suffer from it at this age are typically the ones who develop the most angst over the condition due to becoming overly self-conscious and potentially being teased about their appearance. Nonetheless, those who do develop it at this age typically see it pass fairly quickly.

Those who develop it in their latter years also do so for similar reasons, and may also see it pass relatively quickly. Because it is generally harmless, it does not necessarily need to be treated and, especially in cases involving the elderly, can go unnoticed until it eventually goes away.

For those who have developed gynecomastia, a visit to the doctor at the first sign of abnormal growth in that area of the body is important. While it is not generally harmful itself, it can also serve as an indication of other potential issues in the body, including some forms of cancer.

For those who are not suffering from other conditions and simply want to correct the situation, there are several approaches within the field of cosmetic surgery that can help reduce or completely eliminate the growth in that area.

Whether it is a full mastectomy to remove the breast or breasts, a reduction, liposuction treatment or one of a number of other potential solutions, there are many approaches to reducing the visibility of this issue and the self-consciousness it produces.

For anyone who suffers from gynecomastia and is looking for a solution, speaking with a cosmetic surgeon about the potential treatments and other options can be an important step. By understanding the various ways of correcting the problem, you will be able to make a decision based off of what is most effective and convenient for you.
