HIMSS11: Mobile Health and Interoperability at the Forefront
NaviNet was thrilled to be part of HIMSS11. As one of the marquee healthcare IT industry events, HIMSS11 attracted more than 31,000 attendees and over 1,000 exhibitors. There was definitely buzz around mobile and telehealth technologies. We were also pleased that the show organizers chose to showcase innovative approaches to interoperability.
The excitement around mobile technologies and solutions was evident from the multiple mobile, RFID and telehealth tracks offered throughout the four days of the conference. The first MobiHealthNews session with Brian Dolan "Keep Up: Healthcare is Going Mobile!" attracted more than 850 attendees. Statistics shared in the session pointed to the true transformative nature of mobile technology in driving lower costs and better healthcare outcomes in our industry.
Consider these stats below from the MobiHealth News session:
Consumer Stats:
- There were 200 million mhealth applications in use as of mid 2010;
- 17% of Americans have used their mobile phone to look up medical information while 9% already have an application to track or manage their health;
- Estimates point to 500 million users across the globe using health applications on their smart phone by 2015.
Physician Stats:
- 72% of physicians have a smart phone today; estimates point to 81% of physicians carrying a smart phone by 2012;
- 52% of physicians are already looking up medical information on their phones multiple times a day;
- 86% of physicians with smart phones want mobile access to their EMR system.
Following the mobile health trail, we attended two additional mobile health sessions. "The mHealth Evolving Role" was put together by FierceHealthIT and examined mHealth's impact on EMR workflow, value and clinician buy-in. The panel included John Moore of Chilmark Research, who predicts smart phone saturation to reach 100% among physicians by 2013 and expects tablet adoption, this year at 22%, to reach saturation by 2015.
The last mobile session we attended with Jane Sarasohn-Kahn, health economist, management consultant and mobile healthcare advocate at Health Populi, was on Social Mobile Health. To hit home the impact of mobile and social media on our industry, Jane referenced the Top Mobile Internet Trends by KPCB, which states that mobile adoption has outpaced experts' wildest expectations. While the iPod changed the media industry over a couple of years, there were over 4 million iPhones within 9 months of the product being introduced and the iPad is now in the hands of more than 14 million users globally. Jane noted that consumers don't just use smart phones they marry them.
Clearly smart phones and tablet computers offer a potent and unprecedented opportunity for enabling more physician and patient engagement, which can lead to better outcomes and lowered costs. Why is the mhealth trend especially important to NaviNet? At HIMSS11 we introduced NaviNet Mobile Connect, our mobile care communications platform that enables the delivery of actionable, patient-related information to physicians at the most impactful moment -- in the exam room with the patient.
Another important theme at HIMSS this year was interoperability in action. The Office of the National Coordinator put on an impressive exhibit dedicated to highlighting working and proven examples of HCIT interoperability success from health plans, provider groups and HIEs. AmeriHealth Mercy Family of Companies demonstrated clinical messaging and alerting capabilities in which the health plan delivers clinically-relevant patient information (derived from payer claims, PBMs and other data sources) into provider offices at appropriate times and in flexible formats. AmeriHealth Mercy uses NaviNet Insurer Connect, our multi-payer portal solution, and our communications platform and tools to support this innovative example of interoperability. To better understand the true potential of interoperability in healthcare and the role our government plays, you can watch Brian Ahier's interview with Aneesh Chopra on the Direct Project.
We would be remiss if we failed to mention the excitement surrounding social media and its ability to reach patients and providers. This year, HIMSS hosted a Social Media Center, vibrant with meetings, educational sessions and resources, where attendees were welcome to stop by, get a cup of coffee, and hear best practices from their industry peers. The interest in using social tools was also evident by the packed room for Mayo Clinic social media guru Lee Aase's session on Bringing the Social Media Revolution to Healthcare.
We left HIMSS energized and concur with a comment made by Aneesh Chopra at the show there is no better time to be a healthcare entrepreneur.
