In the last article on how to get rid of stress, we talked about making the decision to be in control of your stress and how to do it easily and quickly.

So now that you have made the decision to be in charge, move on to step five

Step 5 in how to get rid of your "stress" is to separate what is actually happening from the meaning you are placing on the event. When a situation is happening that is normally stressful, it's time for action. Without action, nothing happens.

Separation is vital and is the quickest action step you can take. Here's why. What is, is. All the rest is an interpretation of what's happening. I'll explain. Someone says something to you and you immediately have thoughts about what was said. Then you start to feel a certain way about your thoughts and then you make decisions and take actions based on how you thought and felt.

The most important step here is to remember that what you thought about what happened, which caused a chain reaction of events, was not the same thing as what happened. In other words, your interpretation of what happened is not what happened. But when you think it is, there is where the problem is.

So, if someone is yelling at you, the second you feel the negative feelings coming on, the second you feel the tightness in your chest, the second you feel your stomach turning, the second you start to feel tense, stop it before it goes any further. Here's how you do that.

Ask yourself why you're letting this event bother you and ask yourself what you're making it mean. Really examine your thoughts. I would even suggest that you write them down so you can see them clearly. If you've written five or six thoughts down that are disempowering, you can always come up with some new thoughts. You're not just stuck with the old ones.

Going back to the example about a person yelling at you. Realize that the person yelling is just a person yelling. That's it. There are lots of people that yell and it doesn't bother you. When it's directed at you, in reality, that makes no difference. What they're upset about is what they're upset about and it's not about you. When you stop making it about you, that is, when you stop taking it personally, you gain immediate control and the situation can diffuse itself even before it has a chance to explode.

The benefit is that you'll feel better. You'll have more energy. You'll be healthier, happier, more fulfilled, satisfied and more passionate about life.
