Design
The EliteBook 2540 measures 8.4 x 11.1 x 1.10 inches (H x W x D) and weighs about 1.53 kilograms. The functional parts such as the keyboard, base and bezel are covered with a matte black rubber but the palm rest and lid have the brushed aluminum plates which are most of the times cool when you feel them. The controls of the notebook are all place d above the keyboard. They don't seem to exist when the notebook is turned off but when you switch on the notebook, they are lit up and most of them are touch-sensitive controls. The controls include shortcuts for Wi-Fi indicator, Web, email, a button to turn off the touchpad and volume controls. There is a LED pop out above the keyboard that lets you type even in a dark room.
The EliteBook is powered on the most common six cell battery and yet it obtrudes at the back which reduces its character of being sleek. The only issue with the design is the DVD-ROM eject button on the right spine of the notebook that leads to opening the tray unnecessarily while carrying the notebook. The build quality of the EliteBook 2540p is good and sturdy. The keyboard is spill-resistant where it drains out at the bottom of the notebook in case any fluid is spilt over. It has a built-in accelerometer that shuts down your notebook if it happens to fall before the hard drive is affected. The notebook is not extremely thin but it is portable.

The EliteBook has four USB 2.0 ports, one external VGA monitor, one display port, one headphone/mic jack and one docking connector. The notebook includes one Express Card slot, one Smart Card reader and one Secure Digital slot. It supports high definition audio and it has a 2 megapixels webcam.
The display works without any issues as it is anti-glare and even at maximum brightness; it is tolerable by the eyes. The sound quality of the notebook is not something that can be spoken about but it has a forward directional speaker placed underneath the touchpad and it emits decent sound and sometimes shrills sound. The keyboard is based on the Chiclet style and has a good tactile feedback.
Performance
The notebook takes 48 seconds to boot and is prepared for browsing in another 11 seconds. It has a good battery life of 6.5 hours against the company's claimed battery life of 7.5 hours. HP also offers a nine cell battery which yields a better battery life. On the whole, the HP EliteBook 2540p is a good performer and better than it predecessors.
