The materials you need are the following: hair dye, hair-coloring comb and brush, fine-toothed comb with pointed end, giant hair clips, cotton balls, petroleum jelly, cleansing cream, plastic head cap, rubber gloves, old towels, old newspapers to protect the floors from color drippings, a watch with timer, and perhaps some magazines or books to read while waiting. Once you have all needed items in place, you can begin mixing up the color solution into the color mixing bowl.

If it's your first time to color your hair, or if your hair is completely grown out from the last time you colored and no previously color processed hair remains, apply the mixture to your hair in the same way as you would shampoo. Use petroleum jelly or cleansing cream to protect your scalp, around hairline, forehead, ears, and nape. Follow the directions on the box carefully, and stick to all the precautionary statements on product labels.

Rinse your hair thoroughly in tepid water until the rinse water runs clear as the final step in hair coloring at home.
