If you are one of the many people who are now opting for hair extensions while you are waiting for your natural hair to grow then it is important that you visit your stylist before making any decisions about what type of extensions you want and what method of application you are going to opt for.

Your stylist will be able to help you discover what extensions are best for you and what application will work best for your hair type. Just make sure that when you visit your stylist that they are fully trained in all aspects of the application and removal of your extensions. Your stylist's qualifications and experience when it comes to hair extensions could be the difference between your hair looking the same after your extensions have been removed or your hair suffering damage.

As well as deciding on the type of application you want for your extensions, such as you may want them attached using a weft or bonds; you also need to decide how long you want your extensions to be. Hair extensions generally start from about 10/11" and go up to between 26" and 30", the most popular length being roughly 18". The reason that you shouldn't have extensions applied that are longer than 26" or 30" is due to the fact that hair longer than this could put too much weight on your scalp. This could easily lead to too much pressure, which will lead to damage being caused to your scalp. Another reason that you aren't advised to opt for any longer than 26" to 30" is because hair any longer than this will be on average between eight and ten years old, meaning it will lack quality.

Hair extensions are available in either human hair or synthetic hair. So you need to make the decision; are you going to keep it real or fake? Well to help you make this decision I have a few tips. There are certain things that you should look at such as the versatility of both synthetic and human hair. In this case it is synthetic hair that wins as it will do whatever you want it too, unlike your own hair! However when you look at the quality of them both it is human hair that comes out best as you can treat it exactly like your own hair and it will look and feel more like your own hair.

When it comes to the styling of your hair extensions it is again human hair that fairs better as heated appliances, i.e. tongs and straightening irons can be used but with synthetic hair you are more limited as most heated appliances will cause the extensions to melt.

Whatever choice you make on the type of extensions that you have should however be made based on what is best for your natural hair, so again you should consult your stylist when making this decision as they are the ones who know your hair best.

I highly recommend hair extensions; they can transform your hair into everything that you want it to be and it will remain this way for about six months but don't worry you can always have them re-applied!
