Hair Loss Caused By Antibiotics

Certain drugs and medication can cause hair loss

. Antidepressants and contraceptive pills are known to upset hormonal balances to impair hair growth. There are also arthritic medication, amphetamines and anticoagulants or blood thinners that are known to result in hair loss for many people taking them. The more pervasively used antibiotics such as amoxicillin and penicillin based antibiotics with brands like Kelfex, Gantrisin and Bactrim have been known to cause hair loss as well.

Hair loss caused by antibiotics can occur after about 3-4 months when the hair falls off after a period of dormancy caused by the medication. So its often observed that hair falls off even after taking the prescribed antibiotics have passed.

Moderation Helps

The key is moderation. Anything consumed in excess can be hazardous to your health. It is prudent to follow the dosage as prescribed by your doctors in any medication you need to take to address any illness. Going beyond that can lead to all sorts of health problems, hair loss being one of them.

Medication that causes hair loss can be mitigated if the right dosage is observed. Antibiotics are often prescribed to prevent infection in wounds as well as assist the bodys immune system to ward of viral infection. If, in spite of doing that, hair loss is still experienced, the only treatment is to stop using the medication. Get back to your doctor to consider alternative medication or antibiotics for your specific requirement.

Hair loss caused by antibiotics, or more specifically, the overuse or abuse thereof, is temporary. The only treatment is to stop using the offending medication. But be sure to consult with your doctor before stopping or even reducing the dosage. Bear in mind that your antibiotic medication is meant to address your illness. Hair loss is just a side effect.
