Hair loss is prevalent in both males and females

. While media coverage keeps us updated with images of celebrities such as John Travolta and Declan Donnolley with receding hair lines, what they don't mention is the psychological strain that sometimes accompanies the loss of hair.

Although it is stereotyped that more women experience hair thinning than men, male balding is the most common type of hair loss today. Caused by higher androgen levels, male hair thinning is genetic and is seen in men aged on average in their 20s.

The most common routine of male hair loss is for hair thinning at the top of the head, following a receding hair line. Eventually, the two balding areas will meet to form a U-shaped pattern around the back and sides of the head, leaving, if any, much finer hair, prone to being lost completely.

However, the hair can fall in many different patterns for many different reasons. Other causes of hair loss which may not necessarily follow the aforementioned pattern could be anaemia, under active thyroid, fungal scalp infection, and most commonly - stress.

For some, hair loss can be reversible. For example, if the loss has been diagnosed as a result of iron deficiency, a change in diet can help to combat the loss - foods such as lean red meats, seafood, beans and nuts are especially high in iron. On the other hand there is the male hair loss that isn't reversible, which is when treatment can be considered.

While over the counter herbal remedies and medications can be given, there is no definite proof of these working, and will only start to take effect after at least 6 months (average) of taking the pills. This can be costly and increasingly frustrating.

Another solution is hair pieces, wigs, toppers and hair systems. It is important to consider your options, as although hair pieces and hair systems may have been at the bottom of your list, when looking at the advantages of these the option may be bumped up. For example, you are left with a natural, comfortable, light-weight hair piece which is undetectable to the human eye.

Men's hair loss is common. It is frustrating, but it isn't the end!
