Hair Loss In Women, What You Can Do
The scientific community considers hair loss a "normal" part of the aging process for both men and women. Although most people regularly know what men can do here is what the most recent research says about women and what they can do if hair loss is happening to them, while much is the same there are some gender specific differences that should be taken into account according to the American Medical Association.
Just about everyone's hair thins as part of aging, but androgenetic alopecia ("andro" referring to androgen hormones, and "alopecia" meaning baldness) is considered genetic and so runs in families. Recent research has highlighted that people with this type of genetic or "hereditary" hair loss produce too much of an enzyme that converts testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a hormone that causes hair follicles to shrink and essentially squeeze off any future hair growth from the follicle.
For women hair loss increases with age especially after menopause, but about 10% of premenopausal women have it as well according to recent statistics.
Researchers have also found that hair loss can result from many things that can either increase DHT levels or through yet unknown ways increase hair loss. These include thyroid disease, anemia, iron or other nutritional deficiency, crash dieting or yo-yo dieting, and possibly even severe emotional distress. In many cases where diet or a non-healthy lifestyle is the cause the hair grows back once the underlying cause resolves or is corrected.
Can drugs help?
Minoxidil (Rogaine and generics) is an over-the-counter drug approved for treating hereditary hair loss in both men and women (meaning when DHT is responsible). The FDA and doctors recommend that a person discuss with their doctor the use as it may take several months to see results, and the effects vary greatly between people. Many other remedies on the market are not approved by the FDA for hair loss and have little or no evidence to back them according to scientists.
Propecia is another drug that in recent studies has not shown to be very effective (if at all) for women according to university scientists. Additionally it is "absolutely not approved for womenand women of childbearing age should absolutely not use it (unless they are on strict birth control), because of the risk of severe birth defects in male fetuses," according to the American Medical Association; they should not even touch the pills.
