Hairdos And 80s Fashion Trends: Its Out There!

Although there were many 80s fashion disasters

, some of the clothing and accessory items have resurfaced in popularity in recent years. Fortunately, that same resurgence of style has not been seen in with some of the ridiculous hairstyles that were born in this decade. Here is a list of five hairdos that should stay out of mainstream pop culture permanently.

A High Top Fade

Worn predominately by African American men, the high top fade has only limit: how tall you can actually grow your hair. Hair on the sides and back of the scalp is worn closely cropped, and some people shave designs into it as well. The short hair blends into the longer hair on top of the head. A true high top fade from the eighties is very boxy and several inches tall. In some extreme cases the top of the hair was grown high enough to add six or more inches to a persons height. One noted celebrity with this elevated hairdo was Christopher Reid from Kid N Play, a hip hop band that was popular in the latter half of the decade.

Mullet

This hair cut was almost the exact opposite of a high top fade. Worn by both men and women alike in the eighties, the wearer keeps his or her hair styled short on the top and in front of the head around the face, as if it were a typical short hair cut. The locks on the back of the head are then allowed to grow long. This hair disaster was seen on countless celebrities, including Patrick Swayze, Mel Gibson, Bono from the British rock band U2, and Richard Dean Anderson who is better known as MacGyver. Although many attractive people fell victim to the mullet craze during this era, it has been mocked enough in the decades since that a resurgence will hopefully never be possible.

Crimped Hair

For some strange reason, the idea of crimping a womans hair was popular in 80s fashion. This is done using a crimping iron, which looks similar to a flat iron but wider. The metal pieces inside the tongs are not straight, but are designed in angular waves that look somewhat like a repeating letter V. Crimping ones hair not only made it look jagged, but it increased the overall volume significantly. It made the wearers tresses very large, which may contribute to why it was popular in the first place. Young people in this decade loved big hair of all shapes and sizes.

Teased Hair

Speaking of big hair, it was popular among many of the heavy metal bands to wear long hair teased up into a big cloud surrounding ones head. Although these musical groups were primarily comprised of men, the women who loved the bands were not far behind in this style. The liberal use of hair products was necessary to pull the look off, as was a comb that was pulled across the strands of hair towards the scalp, thus tangling the hair slightly and making it stand up.

Rat Tails

This particular pop culture failure is about as attractive as it sounds. A person would wear their hair cut short and leave a small piece of hair long at the base of the neck. This section was only an inch or less wide, and could be as long as the wearer desired. Although most common among teenage boys, it was also worn by the occasional teen girl and was sometimes braided or dyed a different color.

When it came to clothes, hair, and accessories, 80s fashion came in many different shapes, colors, and sizes. And though it can be fun to dress in glam band costume and wear a teased wig on Halloween, most people are grateful that the time for most of these foolish hairstyles have come and gone.
