Just because you get older doesn't mean your hair has to be chopped off. You can still have a sophisticated hairstyle regardless of your age. It can be even longer than what is accepted. What matters is what looks good on you. If you look good with longer hair than you should keep long hair, if you look good with your hair then keep it short.
