Before you can book your photographer you will need to have finalised the date and location of your wedding

. Good wedding photographers can get booked up well in advance so it is important to sort out these details as soon as possible to make sure you can get the photographer you want.

Portfolios

It is important to meet with your chosen wedding photographer in person and look through their portfolio of work. Whether you want artistic or traditional style wedding photographs you need to be sure that you like the type of work coming out of the wedding photographer's studio and that is to the quality you would expect from your wedding photographs. It is also important to meet with your photographer to judge whether or not you like them and would be happy to include them in your wedding. This is your big day and it will be much more enjoyable if you feel comfortable with the photographer and confident to let them work without too much direction.

Instructions

You will need to make sure your wedding photographer has some instructions for the big day. Provide them with a schedule of when you will need them for photographs, such as just before and after the wedding ceremony and during the reception. If you do not provide them with these details they may not be in the right place at the right time. You should also inform them if you want any specific types of photographs such as one of the bride arriving at the church or the cutting of the cake. It is a good idea to write out a list for them of key photographs and also of any specific family groups you would like to be included. Don't forget that they will most likely not know anyone at your wedding so it is a good idea to appoint a helper from your wedding party who can assist them to arrange the right family groups so that no one is missed out. It would also be helpful if you take a few important members of the wedding party with you when you meet the photographer. This will give you a chance to introduce them to a few more people from your wedding and will also ensure that everyone knows what it going on. No matter how much you plan a wedding can still be a chaotic day with so many guests to organize so if a few members of your wedding party have met the photographer and have been briefed on what is required this can provide some backup for you on the big day.

Photo Albums

Don't forget to discuss with the photographer how many shots you would like for your wedding album. The more shots you choose the more expensive it will be but you don't want to miss the opportunity to get lots of photos of your big day either. Agreeing a reasonable number of photos beforehand will help keep your budget in check and will also ensure you get the photo album you want to record your wedding.
