Hand Surgeon: Cyst Removal
The job of a hand surgeon is varied
The job of a hand surgeon is varied. There are a variety of ailments and concerns that patients have, each one important in their own way. Because people use their hands often, any type of problem, including a cyst, can cause discomfort and become inconvenient during movement. Removal of a ganglion cyst can make a huge difference for someone that works with his or her hands on a daily basis.
Ganglion Cysts
The most common item removed by a hand surgeon is the ganglion cyst. It is usually found in joints and tendons and is filled with sticky fluid. While the cause of these cysts is still unknown, medical practitioners often suggest that they could be a result of trauma or problems with the tissue that lines the joints. They are benign and must be fairly large to cause problems with a person's movements.
Removal
Before any operation, a hand surgeon must look over the cyst and make the decision to remove it. If it does not cause any pain or inconvenience, most people just leave them alone. But any kind of issue caused by the cyst can be remedied by removal. Surgeons cut open the skin (often called lancing) and the liquid is removed (also called aspirating). Once all the liquid has been drained, the skin is closed. In most cases, stiches are required.
In some cases, people can remove the cyst by themselves, although this is not a medically sound solution. With enough pressure on the cyst, it will burst and a person can squeeze around the area until the liquid is removed. Others choose to stick it with something like a needle in order to drain out the sticky substance. Unfortunately, without the help and guidance of a hand surgeon, the area does run the risk of infection if not monitored.
Other Reasons for Seeing A Professional
While it might be tempting for a patient to handle the cyst on their own, there are several other reasons to see a medical practitioner for this concern. Sometimes the pain caused by a cyst is a sign of another health concern. In this case, an x-ray can help the hand surgeon see if there are other problems going on in the area around the cyst.
If you have any type of cyst, growth, or issue with your hands, contact a medical professional right away. Be sure to point out the area of concern, any symptoms you have noticed and make note of when you experience pain or discomfort. The more information you can provide to the doctor, the easier it will be to make a diagnosis.
