Hand Surgery: Preparing For The Procedure And Recovery Process
Hand injuries can be devastating and crippling
, given the extent that each of us relies on them to perform the most basic of tasks. While they can be treated in a variety of ways including physical therapy, a patient must be prepared for they fact that they may require surgery to correct the problem.
While surgery is generally performed as an out-patient procedure, it is a complicated procedure requiring training and experience. A surgeon must be able to skillfully and adequately reconstruct the skin, bone, nerves, tendons, and joints. Because this may require several operations to complete, patients must be committed to their recovery and aftercare.
Because the hand is such a delicate area, recovery from hand surgery may be more extensive than that for other cosmetic procedures. A patient may experience some nausea from the medication and be in pain for several days following the procedure. A doctor may prescribe injections rather than oral painkilling medications. Additionally, a doctor may utilize antibiotics or anti-inflammatory medications. Special dressings and splinting may be used to manage swelling.
A patient may need to keep their hand elevated for several days and may have restrictions placed on certain activities or work following surgery, depending on their individual experience. After some surgeries a patient may need to keep the hand immobilized at night for several months in order to improve recovery. Your doctor will work closely with you on developing an individual plan based on a variety of factors including not only your injury and procedure but your age and medical history.
Many surgery patients will also require some type of therapy. Heat or massage therapy may be prescribed in addition to exercise, physical or occupational therapy which is important for regaining one's full range of motion and optimal functionality.
The recovery process can be grueling, but is vital to follow the plan carefully. This is the only way to ensure that a patient experiences the best results and has the best chance of returning to being able to perform important personal and occupational tasks. A patient must maintain an optimistic attitude by focusing on the results and positive outcome of the process.
Because of the potentially complex procedure and extensive recovery required with surgery, when one has the option, they would be wise to spend some time researching several hand doctors. It is important to work with a doctor who you are comfortable with and trust to have your best interests in mind so that you are confident when following his or her recommended treatment and therapy.
