Hand to Hand combat refers to weaponless fighting when it is used in military vernacular. I dont think that hand to hand fighting has to be bare handed fighting. In my opinion even when you use small weapons other than a gun or pistol you are fighting hand to hand. All military combat units are trained in hand to hand fighting to some degree but the troops who will be more likely to have to fight hand to hand are trained more often and to a greater degree. Techniques taught in hand to hand combat vary just a little bit depending on the type of unit being trained. Foe example Special Operations soldiers are taught more explicit and extreme hand to hand fighting techniques.

In the old war movies you would often see large numbers of soldiers from both sides engaged in hand to hand fighting but modern warfare has drastically changed that scenario. I wont say that larger scale hand to hand engagements are totally gone but the changes in modern warfare and weapons will make it the exception rather then the rule.

The type of warfare which we are engaged in now and for the foreseeable future is an asymmetric warfare. That is every sort of unconventional weapon that you can possibly think of is being used. Enemy combatants dont want to fight in force on force battles anymore because they are outmanned and out numbered. There is also much less likelihood of superpowers engaging each other directly which eliminates large forces fighting it out.

Close quarter weapons are being produced which greatly lessen the need to fight hand to hand. Smaller rifles, machineguns, and smart ammunition all make it less likely that the modern soldier will have to engage in hand to hand combat.

If you are a defending force and find yourself fighting hand to hand you have a serious problem. In that case the enemy has penetrated your position and you are being overrun. When you are this close you cannot use your bombs, artillery, mortars, and grenade launchers on the attackers. You have also lost the benefit of being behind or under cover from his weapon systems. You cant rely on ninety percent of your technology so the playing field is level and the force with the greater number of people will usually win. (This is normally the attacking force).

All of my Special Forces customers are trained extensively in hand to hand combat along with Spec Ops ring customers from every branch of service. In addition the vast majority of combat arms and combat support arms soldiers normally undergo martial arts training on their own. It is offered often free of charge by instructors who happen to be military troops. The military also intensively trains selected troops and then sends them back to their units so that they can serve as primary instructors for the rest of the unit.

Military posts and bases will normally be loaded with gymnasiums with the best exercise equipment and instructors for servicemen and women so none of the US Armed Forces will ever lose their edge in physical ability and self defense training. Military Ring Express
